A figure that does not match your quote

This is the most useful message you can send. Include the written quote, your state, the roof size and the material. Real quotes are how the ranges get tightened.

A correction

If something on the site is factually wrong — a lifespan, a rule, a description of how a policy works — say so and point to a source if you have one. Corrections get made and dated.

What cannot be answered

Some questions look like they belong here but genuinely cannot be answered by a website, and it is better to say so than to guess:

• Whether your claim will be approved. That depends on your policy wording, the cause of damage and your adjuster's inspection. Your carrier is the only source.
• Whether a specific contractor is any good. Check licensing with your state board and ask for local references.
• Your tax position. Deductibility depends on whether the property is a home or a rental, and on your wider situation. That is a question for a tax professional.

Before you write about a figure

Two things make a correction usable, and without them a message is hard to act on.

The written quote, not the verbal one. A number said over the phone changes by the time it reaches paper, and it rarely says what is included. A written quote shows whether tear-off, decking, permit and disposal were counted — which is usually where a gap between this site and a real bid comes from.

Your state and the measurement used. Labor rates vary more across the country than material prices do, and a quote priced by the square is not comparable to one priced by the square foot until you know which is which. Same for windows quoted per opening against a whole-house figure.

If a figure here is wrong, that is worth knowing. The ranges on this site are built from published pricing and adjusted by region, and the thing published pricing cannot capture is what contractors in your specific market are actually charging this month. Real quotes are the only way that gets corrected.

Response times, honestly

This is not a support desk. Messages are read by a person and answered in the order they arrive, usually within two to three working days. Corrections that come with a written quote attached tend to get looked at first, because they are the ones that improve the site.
